Most people consider pool table pockets to be much of a muchness. After all, all a pool table pocket does is catch the ball after it has been potted – right? Yes and no, it does indeed perform that function, but that is not to say that there isn't a vast difference.

Consider, for example, the difference between a pool table in a pub that you have to pay for, and one at home. The table at the pub will likely slide the ball back down into a central holding area after it has been potted, awaiting someone else to put money in to release them. Why the differences?

So why is there such a difference between pool table pockets? After all aside form the difference between the pub and home pool tables there is little need for difference. But that forgets a number of factors.

• Aesthetics. Different pool table pockets can make a big difference to the look of a pool table. For many people the pool table in their home is not just somewhere to play pool but also to look good, so a cheap plastic pocket is not going to be ideal – whilst a classic looking brown leather one could well be the right call.
• Usage. A table that sees a lot of usage is likely to need a hard wearing pocket compared to one that gets used once a month. As such the pool table pockets are going to have to be able to withstand a lot more use.
• Size. Not every pool table is built the same, they do come in a variety of different sizes, and pool table pockets need ot be able to fit the pool table that they were bought for.
